The Henry Derby House, a Greek Revival foundation circa 1836, is located just outside the heart of Salem, Massachusetts.  The owner, Peg, offers a variety of advice in reference to the main attractions as well as attractions that are just as interesting or not so well-known.  The house, clean and spotless, is beautifully decorated in colonial style.  Upon arrival, we were not aware that we would later be conducting an impromptu investigation of a highly active haunted house!

When we entered the front hallway and walked into the parlor, I noticed a young woman wearing a long gray dress with a white apron, or front cover, walking up the front stairway:

It took only minutes for the conversation of a possible haunting to arise and we quickly learned of the most well-known ghost, a teenaged girl that Peg named Sarah.  Supposedly Sarah was a servant of the family back in the 1800’s and she lived on the third floor where there was poor insulation and no heat.  One day Sarah was struck fatally with pneumonia and passed away before she reached adulthood.

Peg told us stories about other visitors seeing Sarah walk up the back stairs to the back bedroom on the second floor, which was once the family’s kitchen area as the first floor was their store.  Footsteps have been heard when no one else was around.   These stairs lead from the kitchen area up to the second floor:

It has also been reported that items within the home have been moved when no one else was around or in the house at the time.  Permanent residents who live up on the third floor now always experience ghostly activity, such as doors slamming, being touched and hearing voices, specifically in the room where Sarah once lived.

While checking in that afternoon I noticed the ghostly presence of a man walking through the front parlor room.  We took photos of the rooms as we normally do when visiting historical bed and breakfasts, and later on noticed an orb in one of the photos in front of the fireplace, near where I noticed the ghostly man walking earlier in the afternoon.

As far as we know, no one else has conducted a thorough investigation of the home so we decided to unpack some of our equipment and hope for a successful investigation on such limited time.  The equipment we used were three different digital cameras, dowsing rods and an EMF sensor.  Over the next few hours, our equipment seemed to prove our senses were keen to the paranormal activity that took place around us.

In the Red Room, formerly a family’s kitchen, I sensed the energy of a young girl.

We captured an orb where the sense of residual energy was strongest.  I felt the young girl cooking in the brick fireplace/oven and standing in front of the closet door to the right of the fireplace.

At this point in time the feeling of someone standing in the hallway between the Red Room and Yellow Room became incredibly strong.

The house cat jumped off the Red Room’s bed and walked into the hallway stopping in its tracks to stare up the back stairs leading to the third floor – where young Sarah once lived.

Taking all of this into consideration, we moved to snap photos and use the dowsing rods in the hallway. The cat then looked into the Yellow Room and ran down the stairs.  Note the orb captured near the top of the door.

We quickly took numerous photos of the stairwell and out of all of them we captured one small orb.  I sensed that Sarah is most comfortable upstairs in her room, so she may have walked from the Red Room to return to her bedroom.

Sarah is a very curious young woman, hesitant with strangers in her former home, but she warmed up quickly making herself well-known to all of us that night

It was at this time that the ghosts of the Henry Derby House seemed to become playful and elusive between the hallways and three rooms.  While standing in the hallway between rooms and staircases taking readings and using the dowsing rods, we began to hear footsteps in the hallway and bedroom on the other side of the Yellow Room.  The room which seemed to be emanating paranormal activity was our room, the Mauve Room.

Taking some photos in the Yellow Room before heading over the Mauve room to investigate (note behind the bed is a door that leads through to the Mauve Room):

A knock was heard coming from the front door and when the picture was taken, an orb was captured:

As we made our way downstairs and back up the front stairs to the Mauve Room to investigate the knocking and footsteps, we walked through the dining room and front parlor.  It was in this area, earlier in the evening, that I noticed the ghost of a cat walking through the dining room and into the front hall:

This is the hallway leading from the dining room to the front door, next to the main staircase where the ghost cat was seen.  The door at the far end turns into the dining room.

At the top of the stairs on the far right end of the hallway is the Mauve Room.  Once we entered the room we used our EMF Sensor, dowsing rods and typical communication to try to capture the ghosts that roam the Henry Derby House.  While sitting in this room we encountered another knock on the door that separated the Yellow Room from ours.  When taking a picture, we captured what we believe to be a form of paranormal energy:

Slowly moving around the room to try and capture the energy from a different angle we heard what sounded like the doorknob of the door that connected the two rooms (to the left of the mirror) being jiggled, we snapped more continuous photos.

We discovered that the Yellow and Mauve rooms tended to be the most active areas for us that night with the spirits seemingly moving at will between the closed doors and rooms. We then utilized our EMF Sensor to try and make contact with one of the active spirits that night.  The Mauve room, the front room we reserved, contains a door to the right of the bed that leads into a small room that holds a twin-sized bed.

The young girl’s ghost roamed between the rooms through that door, and we asked if she would be so kind as to touch the sensor to make the light flash.  After a couple of attempts, we were able to have her move near us enough to result in the EMF Sensor flashing when we asked her to do so as a form of communication.

The EMF Sensor proved to be a great ending to our night at the Henry Derby Bed & Breakfast.  Based upon my senses and the impromptu investigation that we conducted, I can confirm that three ghosts do exist within the house.  The first is that of the young teenaged girl that the current house owner, Peg, named Sarah.  The second is that of a thin man with dark hair who roams the downstairs, and last but not least, the ghost of a cat who Peg believes to be one that she cared for until his death in the house.

In ending, the Henry Derby House Bed & Breakfast is an amazingly well-kept historical home with a delightful atmosphere and caring owners, and the antiques that fill the home add to its character and allow you to take a trip into historical seaside Salem.  As for the ghosts that drift through the halls, and walls, of the house, they are just as friendly and welcoming to any and all visitors!
